King’s Daughters Medical Center Recognized for Excellence in Obstetrics Hemorrhage Care

Brookhaven, MS – King’s Daughters Medical Center has been recognized by the Mississippi Perinatal Quality Collaborative (MSPQC) for achieving Excellence in Obstetric Hemorrhage Care for fully implementing evidenced-based safety measures proven to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.

Obstetric hemorrhage remains one of the most significant contributors to preventable maternal morbidity and mortality. While many adverse events are neither predictable nor preventable, the application of standardized, evidence-based and team-based care across the hospital setting can effectively reduce maternal injury and death.

Mississippi has a disproportionately high pregnancy-related mortality rate with 33.5 pregnancy-related deaths per 100,000 live births. This is compared to 15.9 for the United States as a whole. Improving maternal outcomes in Mississippi and the US will require focused, system-wide efforts that maximize the use of evidence-based strategies.

MSPQC is working with the Alliance for Innovation in Maternal Health (AIM) to coordinate a statewide project focusing on improving care and outcomes related to obstetric hemorrhage

• Provides OB specific resources and protocols to support patients, families, and staff through major complications.
• Performs debriefs after cases with major complications.
• Performs multidisciplinary systems-level review on all cases of severe maternal morbidity.
• Has a hemorrhage cart readily available at all times.
• Has hemorrhage policies and procedures that provide unit-standards.
• Has integrated OB hemorrhage order sets into their hospitals Electronic Health Record.
• Has provided education to nurses and providers.
• Completes hemorrhage risk assessments on mothers with risk level assigned at least once between admission and birth.
• Quantifies blood loss from birth through the recovery period.
• Conducts unit drills related to hemorrhage and protocols set forth.
